On its 60th anniversary, UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) launched a report titled ‘The State of the World’s Children 2007’ that says gender equality is critical to child survival and development. The Report finds that an end to gender discrimination produces the ‘double dividend’ of benefiting women and children, which in turn has a positive impact on the health and development of societies everywhere. Empowering women, explains the report, saves children’s lives. The report asks for abolishing school fees and investing in girls’ education; increasing government funding in gender equality; enacting legislation to create a level playing field for women; ensuring women’s participation in politics; involving women’s grassroots organizations in policy development; engaging men and boys to promote gender equality; and improving research and data on gender issues.
