Researchers have demonstrated a new prototype device for hospital staff that can eliminate Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria from hands, feet and underarms.

The new device works by createing plasma to produce chemicals capable of killing bacteria, viruses and fungi in around 12 seconds without harming the skin.

The research, focusing on cold atmospheric plasmas, turns a group of atoms into plasma, creating more than 200 chemical reactions involving oxygen, nitrogen and water vapour in the air.
