The Asian Development Bank will provide $49m to strengthen surveillance response systems to prevent the spread of communicable and tropical diseases in Cambodia, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Vietnam. The Second Greater Mekong Subregion Regional Communicable Diseases Control Project will also improve the health services involved in disease control in border districts of three countries. The control systems for community-based communicable diseases will be aimed at 1.7 million people living in 116 border districts in the three countries. The surveillance response systems will help in the prevention and control of dengue fever, infectious diseases such as severe acute respiratory syndrome and swine flu, communicable diseases such as cholera and HIV, and tropical diseases such as Japanese encephalitis and schistosomiasis. Each country’s health ministry will be the uting agency for the project, while the regional co-ordination unit will be based in Vientiane in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
