The Chennai based Dr Kamakshi Memorial Hospital (KMH) performed a very rare heart surgery on a 20 year old girl from Basara, Iraq. She had complaints of breathing, combined with bouts of cough and pain in the chest.

The challenge before the team of doctors lead by Dr Premanand Ponoth, Chief Cardiac Surgeon,KMH was that the heart was on the right side and this called for clear understanding and analysing the whole situation and planning the complicated surgery.She had holes in the heart and there was mixing of pure and impure blood inside the heart. The pressure in the heart was very high that made the task even more risky. Dr Premanand and team took up the challenge and operated upon her and she is recovering well. The operation lasted for over 6 hours. Dr Premanand said,”The Right-sided heart is a rare phenomenon and is found one in 10,000 people. These people will have rotation of the abdominal organs also. The patient had only the heart rotation, which is even more rare (1 in 1,30,000). Such a rare case having a defective heart extremely rare. This type of case is seldom reported. We are happy that our team came out successful in this very difficult surgery and the patient also, is recovering fast”.The patient under went open heart surgery. After connecting the patient to heart lung machine, heart was arrested. The right upper chamber of the heart was opened and the defect which caused mixing of blood. It was found to be 3 cm X 2.5 cm, which was closed with pericardial patch.
