Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have performed country’s first robot-assisted urological surgery recently. A team of doctors headed by Dr P N Dogra, Professor and Head, Department of Urology, AIIMS, performed the robot-assisted ‘anterior pelvic exenteration’ on a 50-year-old woman suffering from cancer of urethra and urinary bladder last week. The surgery involved the removal of seven body parts including the urinary bladder, uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, anterior vaginal wall, urethra and pelvic lymph nodes, according to a statement issued by the hospital. Dr Y K Gupta, chief spokesperson for the prestigious hospital stated that this rare type of surgery was performed for the first time in the country. He also informed that AIIMS has initiated a drive to use the robot-assisted technology in a bid to benefit and save maximum number of patients from ailing diseases.
