KMC Hospital Blood Bank has earned the distinction of becoming the first blood bank in the state to be accredited by National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH). The presentation ceremony of NABH Certificate to KMC Hospital Blood Bank will be held at Dr T M A Pai Convention Centre.

The state-of-the-art blood bank at KMC Hospital Ambedkar (Jyothi) Circle started functioning on October 2, 1991. The 24-hour blood bank has four blood storage refrigerators, which have a storage capacity of over 1,500 units of blood. KMC Hospital Blood Bank is the first one in Mangalore recognized as a zonal blood-testing centre for HIV by the director general of health services, New Delhi and Karnataka State Aids Prevention Society (KSAPS).

It is also the first blood bank to use the advanced `gel technology’ for cross matching, thereby improving patient safety in transfusion practice. The blood bank was the first to house a component separation unit in the district. KMC Hospital blood bank conducts at least 45 to 50 voluntary blood donation camps every year and has been successful in creating awareness among the public about voluntary blood donation.
