The patient portal or the new Allscripts online patient communications solution, will allow the physician practices to save time, lower costs and increase revenue while providing services that are increasingly popular with patients. Replacing the paper forms and phone calls, the solution, which will be called Allscripts Patient Portal, permits patients to make requests for appointment, renewal of prescriptions, viewing test results and conducting other common tasks on-line, including HIPAA-compliant secure messaging with their care team.

It is expected by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) that physicians are required to provide electronic patient-to-provider communications as a condition of qualifying for Electronic Health Record incentive payments authorized by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009.
