Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai, one of the pioneering healthcare institutions in India, recently installed an advanced cardiology PACS from SoftLink International (a leading health IT provider based in Pune), replacing its 8 years old stand alone Workstation solution procured from SoftLink.

The electronic storage of patient images generated during an echocardiograph or catheterization procedure in a networked digital archive is called Cardiology PACS (C-PACS). The DICOM Compliant digital patient images are stored, managed, transmitted and displayed across the network of the hospitaland over Web.

Cardiologists can view the digital images on a cardiology workstation, which is composed of a display monitor and a central processing unit that is networked into PACS. The Image Server is connected directly to the Cath Lab and/or ECHO machine for receiving DICOM images, which are stored on the server with an on-line storage of about 6 months and can go up to a few years.

In last couple of years, a number of significant changes have occurred in image capture, archiving, data retri. Integration with information systems and networked approach have dramatically changed the outlook of the management, which decided to implement C-PACS, Cardiology Imaging Network Solution by upgrading traditional stand alone workstation.

After understanding the exact requirement of the hospital, Softlink deployed C-PACS solution connecting to Cathlab with approximately one year of on-line storage on a high-end RAID L5 server for total storage and security of patient images. The solution has created a centralized archive for the entire department.

The Medical director of the Hospital Dr. Mohanty said, “The Solution has enabled doctors to access patient studies from diagnostic review stations on the hospital’s local area network (LAN), and they are no longer required to visit Cathlab for accessing Patient studies”. He further added “Two networkedenterprise review stations that are strategically placed to increase physicians’ access to recent as well as the older images during patient interaction and consultation, resulting in improved workflow as well as patient care in the cardiology department.”

SoftLink’s C-PACS architecture is highly scalable, allowing hospitals to start with a single-lab solution and move to multi-center and multi-modality network based solutions over a period of time. The solution supports other imaging modalities such as electro physiology and vascular labs, cardiac CT, Color Dopplers, 2-D/3-D Echo making it a “ONE Stop” solution for image archival, storage and review for the hospital.

The simultaneous review of patient images from multiple modalities, in multiple window positions the cardiologist to make a better diagnosis as he has 360 degree view of all the diagnostic images of a patient on one screen.
