On the occasion of RSNA 2008, visualisation specialist Barco treated the audience to demonstrations of its latest products for high-performance image processing. The company presented several technology demonstrators that provided a powerful yet budget-friendly processing solution for the large volume images created by today’s imaging devices. With these prototypes, Barco highlights its in-house know-how in the area of FPGA, CPU and GPU technology. Earlier this year, Barco won the 2008 Frost & Sullivan European Product Innovation Award for its GPU-based ‘TDRS-7101’ engine. Based on its experience with this award-winning platform, Barco has extended the application to suit a broad range of custom-built modality subsystems. One of the most eye-catching examples at RSNA is a high-performance 4D CT rendering platform. The solution in question is capable of generating high-quality representations of multi-slice CT data in near real-time (4D CT). According to Barco, the system anticipates the rise of 4D imaging in dental, cardiac or endoscopy applications. Other innovations include a “three-in-one” General Purpose GPU-platform for medical imaging applications. This powerful engine can perform image reconstruction, as well as processing and visualisation with unparalleled speed and quality. The platform offers imaging equipment manufacturers the flexibility to reduce costs, while enhancing the flexibility of their CT, MR, X-ray or any other modality system. Finally, Barco will present the latest version of its MICB-1340 Image Compression Board. This PCIe board is specifically designed for network-based medical imaging applications. Installed in a server, it will reduce CPU load, reduce bandwidth, and improve image quality, leading to world-class medical applications even on light client devices over narrow bandwidth. The MICB board is currently being rolled out in hospitals across the globe as part of advanced, network-based EMR/PACS viewers from Agfa HealthCare and Medical Insight.
