The University of California at Merced, is planning to set up a telemedicine centre in the Northern San Joaquin Valley, where many disadvantaged patients lack access to medical specialists. The video conferencing equipment in the centre will enable patient to be uated by a specialist located 80 to 90 miles away at the University of California at San Francisco, or the University of California at Davis. The proposed center is part of the San Joaquin Valley eHealth Network Project, which aims to establish four centers in a region including the valley, between Stockton and Bakersfield, and the Sierra foothills. The AT&T is providing US$ 5,00,000 fund, while US$ 2,00,000 from the California Emerging Technology Fund and US$ 250,000 from the California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley. The project aims to increase healthcare services for people who are living in the valley’s farming towns.
