Health information technology is a key component of Rhode Island Gov. Carcieri’s five-point health care agenda to lower costs, increase access and improve the quality of care being delivered. Many people would be surprised to know that up to 30 percent of medical costs are attributed to waste or duplication, while billions of dollars are lost to poor or additional medical care that could have been prevented if the health care providers had access to up-to-date patient information. This Health care IT aims to address these problems to reduce costs while improving the quality of healthcare to consumers. In Rhode Island a health care information network has already begun.
