Technology has the potential of enhancing both quality and cost efficiency not only in the larger centers but also in rural clinics and hospitals as well. BCBSND has generously started an innovative grant program for rural health enhancement in Lisbon. Lisbon Area Health Services has used the funds provided by the Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota’s in purchasing a computed radiography machine and a Digital Subscriber Line, which will digitally transmit images to a radiologist’s in Fargo. Patients will have final radiologist readings sent to their personal physician within hours, rather than a week. The patient’s films will also remain in the facility giving local physicians immediate access, therefore improving the quality of patient care.The focus of the grant program will continue to address the high priority health needs of rural populations. However, with the growth of technology in health care, BCBSND has chosen to emphasize the development and implementation of ICT infrastructure that proves to be cost-effective, improves quality of care, and/or improves access to care.
